Blanca Blue Dining RoomAtmosphere
Rating: ★★★★☆

The restaurant has a very modern decor with a large bar and lounge area.  Extremely large windows open directly out to Banderas Bay allowing a great view of sunsets.  In addition to inside seating, there’s also a nice large patio that has a large fire pit area for cooler evenings.

Service
Rating: ★★★★☆

Service matches the quality of the restaurant.  Service is very friendly, albeit designed around a “dining experience” vs. a normal meal.  For simply drinks and appetizers, you should allow about 1.5 to 2 hours.  For dinner 2-3 hours would be normal.  Of course, you could always ask for service to be expedited.

Pork Blanca BLueFood
Rating: ★★★★☆

All of the food from appetizers to desserts were very good.  Dishes are fairly mainstream, with a unique twist.  Our favorite was the prosciutto wrapped pork tenderloin.  The pork was done to perfection and it was a great balance of tastes.  The menu is semi-limited, with about 4-5 entree choices  Appetizers were limited to two salads and a soup.  The corn bisque was excellent.  Prices are on the high-side for the area, but worth it.  One oddity, was that there weren’t any mexican entree’s on the menu.

Overall

We liked Blanca Blue.  Even though the quality of the food was great, there is still great food less than 10 minutes away for about 20-30% less.  Also, the lack of entrees that feature mexican flavors and inspiration surprised us for the quality of the restaurant.  The sunset views can’t be beat, even if you’re just going for drinks.

Mama Rosa'sKnow Before You Go:
Many cab drivers in PVR do not know where Mama Rosa’s is in the central part of town.  Make sure to take the address with you.  Leona Vacario no longer is a thru street, so there’s a short 50 yard walk up the hill to the restaurant.

Atmosphere
Rating: ★★★★☆

The restaurant is “open air” and small with around 12 tables.  During high travel season, you may want to consider a reservation.  It sits on a small hillside in town, you you have a pretty good view of Banderas Bay as well as the rooftops of houses below.  It’s family run, so it has a very friendly and homey feel.

Service here is exactly what you’d expect.  It’s just like eating at your grandmother’s house.  Very attentive, you glasses are never empty and extremely polite.  Dinner is served traditionally at the table, while brunch is served buffet style.

Food

Stuffed Poblano PepperEverything here was fantastic.  It’s primarily regional mexican, but you won’t have any trouble finding anything here.  For dinner, we loved the roasted fruit salad, chorizo stuffed chicken breast and the stuffed poblano pepper with candied pomegranate seeds.  On our second visit we went back for brunch, which is served buffet style from 8AM – 2PM every day.  There are many choices, including freshly made tamales, green chili pork, queso enchiladas, refried beans, huevos and much more.  For around $10US, it’s a great value.

Mama Rosa’s also has a pretty well stocked bar.  The margaritas, daiquiris and pina coladas were standouts.  Pricing was about $6-$7US per drink.

Overall

This place is definitely worth seeking out in old town Puerto Vallarta.  An easy 5 minute walk to the Malecon beachfront, you’re not far off the beaten path.  We felt very welcome here and the food ranks at the top of our list for Puerto Vallarta.

Know Before You Go:

Casa IsabelCasa Isabel is located on one of the steep hillsides of Puerto Vallarta.  If you’re walking, be prepared for a steep climb the last 200 yards.  If you’re taking your own car, there is minimal parking available and area to turn around near the top is extremely limited.  Also be aware that since Casa Isabel is “open air”, smoking is allowed in the restaurant.

Atmosphere
Rating: ★★★★★

Inside Casa IsabelYou can’t beat the view from Casa Isabel.  Because of its perch high on the hillside of Puerto Vallarta, you have great views of the city and the Banderas Bay day or night.  You have a great view of the nightly fireworks from here.  Otherwise, the atmosphere is very tropical tiki bar.  The bar portion of the restaurant has a bank of big screen tv’s so it’s very crowded during popular sporting events.

Service

Service was very friendly and our food came out fast.  Servers had great recommendations for items on the menu.  Many of the servers appeared to have worked here for awhile, so service was very consistent.

View of PVR at night from Casa IsabelFood & Drink
Rating: ★★★★½

If you can’t find something to like here, then you probably are never satisfied.  Just about anything you could want from a mexican food point of view is here.  The fajitas were excellent, as were the chicken and fish dishes.  Everything was very reasonably priced, including the drinks.  They have a full bar, so you can have just about any drink you want.  Plenty of beers on tap as well.  You can get bananas flambe or spanish coffee made table side.  While it’s entertaining to watch, both were good, but not outstanding.  Let another table order them and then just enjoy the show.

Overall

While it does attract a bit of an older crowd, from the comments we overheard, this is a popular spot for both visitors and locals.  The foods great, drinks plentiful and the views amazing.  You need to put this on your list if your visiting PVR.  Just remember if you’re planning on walking, it’s a steep climb up.  If you drink or eat too much, don’t worry, you can just roll yourself down the hill when you leave.
