Stop by any of the three locations of Espresso Vivace in Seattle and you’ll understand what all of the buzz is about.  And I’m not just talking the buzz from the espresso.  The espresso here is fantastic.  Some of the best we’ve had in our travels.  Started as a coffee cart back in the late 80s, these folks have perfected the art of espresso above and beyond what other small shops try to be.  We stopped into the location on Yale, directly across from the REI flagship store.  A huge space, with plenty of Espresso Vivaceroom to spread out and enjoy the free wireless, you can linger over you favorite espresso or coffee drink and watch the day go by.  Vivace concentrates on just two coffee blends. Espresso Vita and Espresso Dolce.  Our preference was for Dolce, due to the great chocolate undertones.  Vita has a slightly more caramel taste.  Either way, you can’t go wrong.  An added bonus is their website has useful information for baristas or just others who have an interest in making a great cup of espresso. You can also order their coffee beans on-line both roasted or “green”, so even if you can’t make it to Seattle, you can still enjoy it!

IAH TIP:  Parking in this neighborhood can be challenging at best.  We parked in the REI parking garage for free (First hour is free) and walked across the street to Espresso Vivace.

Located directly across from the Pike Street Market, you can’t miss this great coffee place.  If you’re looking for a wide selection of coffee, you’ve found the right place.  SCW has an Express Bar, where you can order your drink and be on your way, or a Seattle Coffee Works“Slow Bar”, which has more of a “tasting room” concept, similar to wineries.  At the Slow Bar, you can sample from a long list of coffees from around the world.  You can also sample the same coffee brewed by different methods to see the effects it has on taste.  If you have time to kick back or are a coffee aficionado, then definitely take some time and enjoy.  This shop is a bit small, for as popular as it is, so if you’re there at peak times, you may have trouble finding a seat.  They do have several tables outside on the sidewalk, so if the weather is nice, you’ll be able to people watch the traffic heading to the market.  SCW has coffees available by mail order, including unroasted and roasted coffee. They also have a “subscription” coffee service, so you’ll never run out of your favorite joe.

IAH TIP:  If you’re going to the Pike Place Market, just take a short 2 minute walk across the street to SCW.

Located on the outskirts of downtown on the otherside of the 405, you’ll find Coffeehouse Northwest.  Here instead of coffee, our goal was to try the highly prized hot chocolate that we had heard about in various reviews.  We were not disappointed.

The space is very simple and has a very neighborhood feel.  Coffeehouse Northwest can almost be thought of as the In-N-Out of coffee.  The menu here is simple and on a chalkboard.  There are only about 8 things listed and they’re all the basics.

For coffee, they use Stumptown Roast coffee.  So, coffee drinker beware, based upon our review above of Stumptown.  But, the hot chocolate is really where they set themselves apart.  The difference lies not only in the preparation, but also the chocolate they use.

Not to be content with the typical “mocha syrup” that other coffee purveyors use, they use cocoa nibs from Venezuela.  The nibs are put into the milk, then steamed, which permeates the choclate flavor throughout the drink. You’ll be happy that there isn’t any “chocolate sludge” in the bottom of your cup after you finish your drink.  We really, really enjoyed it and truly was “hot” chocolate.

Prices here are a bit above other coffee shops by about 50 cents to $1, but are well worth it.  Service was very friendly and they were more than happy to answer any question you had about their drinks or coffee.  Albeit  a bit out of the way, we’d come back here long before Stumptown and suggest you should too.

Koffi is located in a small strip mall  called “The Corridor” on the northern end of Palm Springs.   It’s one of the few independent coffee shops in the area.  We made several visits and various times of the day and there was always a line.  After we sampled our first drink there, we understood why.  All of their drinks offer two types of espresso, American or European.  Our favorite was the European.

In addition to coffee, they have a large selection of tea as well.   One of our favorite drinks was an Iced Mint Tea Latte.  It was almost like Girl Scout Thin Mints in liquid form.  Service was efficient, quick and personable.  In addition to adequate indoor seating, there’s also a large courtyard with ample seating in the back.

Probably one of the best cups of coffee not only in New York City, but in the US.  With five locations throughout Manhattan, you have to make time to stop by.  You’ll often find “Joe”, aka Jonathan Rubinstein behind the counter at the Waverly Place location in the Village making his latte creations.  This is a far cry from your local Starbucks.  While you won’t find the “venti raspberry-pumpkin-2% soy – no foam, 162.5 degree mocha carmelatto” at Joe’s, you will find the smoothest, best-tasting espresso, coffees and lattes.

The Waverly Place location is at the corner of Waverly & Gay St in the Village.  It’s a simple, small location with around 8 tables and a couple more on the front patio.  You’ll want to get here early, to avoid standing very long in line.  They have a nice selection of muffins as well as the largest glaze donuts you’ll find everywhere.  It’s a very “neighborhood” atmosphere and the service is friendly and efficient.  If you choose to have your coffee in-house, you’ll need to “bus” your own table.  We highly recommend you drink you’re coffee in house to savor the ambience.  Joe gets a full 5 stars from us.
