Fyly Yachting Charters is a boat charter company based in Athens.  We’ve used Fyly for a couple of different private sail boat charters and they’ve come through every time.  Fyly charters boats of all sizes that carry from 6 to 12 passengers.  You can rent bare boats, where you sail yourself or you can charter with a captain.  We’ve always done the latter.  The cost is surprisingly affordable, especially if you can fill a boat.  If you choose to charter with a captain, you’ll decide jointly on an itinerary.  Remember that sometimes you’re ideas of a destination and the winds idea of your destination may be two different places, so it pays to be flexible.  A lot will also depend on whether you choose to just “sail” or if you also choose to use the boat’s motor to get you where you need to go.  Fyly charters throughout the Greek Islands with multiple “ports” available for departure and arrival.  We’ve used both Athens and Kos as a port of call.  Their boats are always well kept and are never more than a few years old.  They’ll also stock your boat with supplies before you depart if you wish.  If you’re really looking for a relaxing way to spend a vacation and see the islands of Greece from a whole different perspective, sailing with Fyly is the way to go.  Cristina and her staff will make your sailing trip one you’ll always remember.

We used Mauro for transport services while we were in Piemonte.  Mauro was fantastic.  He picked us up at the Turin airport to our rental villa near Dogliani, and then on various short trips in the Piemonte area.  Mauro was always on time, extremely pleasant and knows a lot not only about the area itself, but the history as well having grown up in Monforte d’ Alba.

Paolo Ferrero

Paolo Ferrero

Paolo Ferrero is the owner/operator of Buon Gusto Tours.  We used Paolo for transportation and guide services during a 9 day wine trip to Piemonte.   We had a custom tour in mind, so we had provided him with a set list of wineries that we wished to visit.  He added a few of his own, which were small boutique wineries in the area.  He was also able to get us tickets to the Palio, which is very difficult.

We relied on Paolo to be our guide, translator and a most transportation during our entire stay.  Paolo has an excellent knowledge of the area, wine, restaurants and people of Piemonte.  He did a great job of being flexible when our plans needed to be and took us to many off-the-beaten-path places we would not have found on our own.  He speaks multiple languages and was a godsend in being a translator for us when needed. Paolo is also a cookbook author as well.  We had him cook for us one evening in our rental villa and the food was phenomenal.  We give high recommendations to Paolo.

Travelzoo Deal: $29 for 6 Bottles of Premium Wines

A great deal from Travelzoo on six bottles of premium wine from Richard Branson’s Virgin wine for $29.  Now, that $29 does not include tax or shipping ($19), but its still a great deal for good wine.  We haven’t tried any of this wine ourselves, but Richard Branson usually doesn’t put the Virgin brand on anything if it’s not at least halfway decent.  And, when you’re only really spending around $9 per bottle, with shipping and tax included, it’s not a bad deal.  You also have the option to do all red, all white or a combination thereof.  This Travelzoo deal was a local “Denver” deal, however in reading the terms and conditions, it appears to be valid as long as you live within a state that can be shipped to: AZ, CO, DC, IA, ID, IN, LA, MN, NC, ND, NM, NV, OR, SC, TN, VA, WA, WI and WY only.

Umberto Benvenuto

Giovanni, his father Umberto and their entire staff can turn your trip in the Amalfi coast into one of the best ever.  Whether you need transportation, guide service or both,  Benvenuto should be your first choice.

We used Benvenuto for a 5 day trip that took us from Rome, to Naples then Positano.  It included transportation between the cities and tours of Naples and Pompeii.  We had a few changes during our trip and nothing was ever a problem.  It was all taken care of without question.  Benvenuto also has several friends that can provide transportation or guide service in other parts of Italy as well.  That’s perfect if your trip includes more than just the Amalfi.

Jet Luxury Resorts

We used Jet Luxury Resorts for the first time a few weeks ago for a stay at the Trump SOHO in NYC.  Their prices are definitely better than most other sites, including “flash sale” sites, like Vacationist, Luxury Link, etc.  Another advantage Jet has is that you don’t need to “prepay” for your reservation.  Your credit card is only charged three days prior to your arrival date, giving you plenty of time to cancel prior to your trip.  The inventory of rooms they have at each of their offered locations are somewhat limited, so if you find availability on their site for dates you’re looking to travel, book quickly.  Since Jet has specific rooms at each property, you’ll actually be assigned a room number when you book.  That’s unique compared to other booking sites.

Before our arrival, we did have to make a change in our reservation.  On our first couple attempts to reach them at their 800 number, we were placed into the automated answering loop.  The next day, we tried again and reached a live person on the second ring.  While they were very helpful, the agents don’t sound like the company image Jet wants to project.

When we did arrive at the hotel, there was a problem with one of our reservations.  While we had booked for three nights, the hotel desk reservation indicated we were staying only one night.  Because of Jet’s special relationship with each property, it’s Jet that handles all of the payment and booking and passes that information along to the hotels front desk for check-in.  In our case, the information wasn’t transmitted correctly.  Only then did we find out that the front desk couldn’t help us.  They indicated they were only going by the information they received and we would have to call Jet to resolve the issue.  We were checking in at 10:30PM ET and Jet’s help and reservation line closes at 10PM ET.  We thought for sure we were out of luck and wouldn’t be able to resolve the issue until the next day.  Not something you want to deal with while you’re on vacation.  Luckily, someone was still at Jet and answered the phone.  To their credit, the person immediately phoned the hotel and within about 10 minutes the problem was resolved.

This is probably our only main complaint.  If there’s an issue with your booking and you’re checking in after hours, you may be out of luck and getting it resolved until the next business day.  in our opinion. they definitely need to offer a 24 hour problem resolution line.

Overall, we were pleased with Jet Luxury Resorts and we’d use them again.  If they can get their act together a bit more on their reservation line and make sure assistance is available 24/7/365, we’d give them 5 stars instead of 4.

Official Tourism Websites for All Countries

Once you’ve narrowed down your list of potential destinations, a great place to start putting together additional information is the destination countries official tourism website.

It’s often difficult to find a list of every countries official national tourist site in one place.  Well, after quite a bit of research, we’ve assembled a list of most of the major ones here.  We’ve also included a few extras, even if the destination is part of another country.  For example Reunion and Tahiti are actually part of France, but maintain their own individual official tourism sites.  No problem.  They’re all here.

We do monitor these on a regular basis to make sure the list is as accurate and up-to-date as possible.  Occasionally, we may miss one or two.  If you find anything inaccurate or missing, just put it in the comments and let us know.  Each of the links below open in a new browser window.

Vacationist & Luxury Link

Specialty: Both sites owned by Travel & Leisure, LuxuryLink is an “auction-style” discount site and Vacationist is similar to Jetsetter and others, where you have discounts for a short period of time.

Website: www.luxurylink.com and www.vacationist.com

LuxuryLink has been around for a few years, where Vacationist started just a few months ago.  Both sides offer upscale hotels at discount prices.  LuxuryLink takes an “auction style” approach where you bid for the deal they’re offering.  Their deals also tend to be longer periods (think a 5 to 7 day stay), and you have to give three alternative dates for travel.  If you’re looking for a very specific date, that may or may not be good.  LL also tends to offer more “package” type trips.  This is great if you want your airfare, hotel and activities all rolled into one price.  Vacationist is more traditional where you have a great price for a limited amount of time.  They tend to have a wide variety of properties in a wide variety of locations.  A bit more so than other similar sites.  We’ve used LuxuryLink before and haven’t had any issues.  We haven’t had the opportunity to give Vacationist a try.

Upside: A chance to book a 4 or 5 star vacation or hotel for a great price.

Downside: Minimum stay and date stay restrictions on Luxury Link.

Concierge

Specialty: Destination planning website companion to Conde Nast Traveler

Website: www.concierge.com

Concierge is a great website to start with when you’re not exactly sure where you want to go on your next vacation.  You’ll find a lot of good high-level information on activities, sights to see, hotels, shopping, night life and more for most popular destinations around the world.  One of the best features of the site is the list of pre-screened travel agents that specialize in various destinations.   You’ll find complete bios of each agent and more about their experience in their specialized destination.  All around, Concierge is a great place to get a feel for various destinations and begin planning your trip.

Upside: Great general information about a wide array of destinations and a great list of agents who can help make your vacation even better.

Downside: Sometimes a bit “too” high-level and annoying pop-up nags to subscribe to Conde Nast.

Travelzoo

Specialty:
Limited time deals on airfare, hotels, vacation packages, cruises and entertainment around the globe.

Website: www.travelzoo.com

We’ve used Travelzoo almost since the day we began traveling together.  We’ve booked many deals listed on their website (mostly hotels) and have never had any issues and have always been very pleased.  Every week, Travelzoo lists their Top 20 deals, but you can also search the site by location and what you’re looking for (hotel,airfare,etc.).  When you subscribe to their newsletter, you’ll get notified once a week (usually on Wednesday) when new deals are announced.  When you get two of your friends to sign up for their newsletter with your invitation, you’ll become a VIP member which allows you early access to deals before they send out their weekly announcement.

Travelzoo has deals in all price ranges, categories and destinations.  We’ve saved a lot of money over the years using the deals they’ve advertised.  One thing we have learned is that when a deal comes out, jump on it.  Their deals can sell out quickly and sometimes they last only a matter of days.

Upside: Great deals that are hard to match elsewhere.  For hotel deals, you don’t always have to prepay as you do on other sites.

Downside: Deals go fast, so you can’t delay.  For some destinations, there can be a “deal drought” for a few weeks without any specials.
