UK Customs & Immigration lines at Heathrow are outrageous!

On our trip last week to Marrakech, we flew through London’s Heathrow airport.  We’ve been through Heathrow numerous times to catch connecting flights.  We’ve noticed over the past couple of years that the UK customs & immigration lines at Heathrow continue to get longer and longer each time we pass through.  On our way through this time, the line was over two hours long.  To make matters worse, there were only 6-7 border control officers working and at least 500 people in line.  If this is what it’s like now, what will it be like when the Olympics are in London this summer?

There’s been a lot of press lately about the long lines at Heathrow, including a crackdown by the UKBA (UK Border Authority) on frustrated passengers taking photos of the long lines.  Immigration lines are the longest for non-EU/non-UK passport holders.  According to news reports and our own observations, the delays aren’t just happening at Heathrow Terminal 5, the main home of British Airways.  They’re happening at other terminals as well.

We flew in to Heathrow from Newark on United into Heathrow Terminal 4.  That’s where we saw over 500 people in line waiting to clear UK Customs.  We arrived around 10AM on a Sunday morning.  While there was a light rain, it didn’t appear that UK customs lines were due to late arriving aircraft or “bunched” arrivals.  Luckily, we had upgraded to Business on the flight into LHR.  United passes out coupons to it’s Business customers, so they can use the Fast Track immigration lanes at Heathrow.  This allows you to bypass the regular UK customs line and go to an expedited lane.  While others were waiting hours to clear customs, we waited less than 5 minutes.  It was definitely one of those times we were glad we upgraded.

If you’re connecting through Heathrow during future travel, make sure you leave enough time for connecting flights if you’re traveling on a different airline in a different alliance.  Since most terminals are disconnected at Heathrow, if you’re flying another airline onward, you’ll have to clear UK Customs for your transfer.  Let’s hope that the UKBA get their act together, so all of us passing through can get where we need to go.

Back from Marrakech

We’re back from a week in Marrakech.  I’ll have to say, it’s better than we anticipated.  If you’ve been to Tangier, erase that experience from your mind.  Marrakech is different.  We’ll have full trip details, photos and video coming soon.  Stay tuned!

Live from Marrakech on our Twitter Account

Follow us all week on Twitter this week @itsallhere.  We’ll be tweeting short updates and photos, live as we experience Marrakech.

Off to Marrakech

Hard to believe, but we’re headed back to Africa for the second time in just under a month.  This trip takes to Marrakech for a week.  We’ll be staying in the old Medina for our first trip to the city.  On the docket for this trip is relaxation, some spa time, an authentic Moroccan cooking class, day trip to the Atlas Mountains and whatever other trouble we can get into.  We’re back the first week of June.  We’ll have a full report, as well as photos and videos to share.  Check back soon!

Vochol at Denver International Airport (DEN)

The Vochol is a 1990 VW Beetle covered entirely in tiny beads by two families of Huichol indians in Mexico.  On a worldwide tour, the Vochol is currently on display in the main concourse through August 31.  If you’re traveling through Denver and have time to stop in the main concourse, check it out.  Here’s more on the Vochol from the Denver Post.

United Airlines to Announce Denver to Tokyo (DEN-NRT) Service Today

According to the Denver Business Journal, United Airlines is expected to announce today service from Denver to Tokyo Narita, starting early in 2013.  United would be the first carrier to offer direct service to Asia from Denver.  Rumors are spinning that one of the new 787 Dreamliners that United is acquiring starting in September this year, may be used on the long distance route.  Assuming that United will keep the airfare reasonable (they probably won’t), this will save at least a 2-3 hours or more off a trip to Asia from Denver, eliminating the need to connect at LAX, SFO or SEA.

Back from Zanzibar

We’ve just came back from our week in Zanzibar….and what a week it was.  Our goal of the trip was just to relax and unwind, which we did.  However, Turkish Airlines had  a different idea when our bags disappeared for 3 days of a 9 day trip.  But, we tried not to let that rain on our parade.  So, here are some things coming throughout the week:

1.  A review of our first experience on Turkish Airlines…that we’ll affectionately call the “Turkish Air:  A tale of two airlines”

2.  A review of the small boutique resort where we spent most of our time, Essque Zalu

3.  Photos of the trip

4.  Three new videos – One of the resort, one of our trip to a spice plantation and the last a historical tour of Stone Town

5.  Our first ever Destination Guide featuring Zanzibar

So, stay tuned.  We’ll also be back to regular posts this week as well.

Our First ” Pack for a Purpose” Delivery

Yesterday, we made our first Pack for a Purpose school supply delivery.  If you’re a regular reader of this blog, you may remember a couple of weeks ago we ran across a TripAdvisor review that mentioned Pack for a Purpose.  We packed a medium size North Face duffel bag full of pencils, colored pencils, crayons, pens, erasers, pencil sharpeners, flash cards and stickers.  We also included a couple of mini-white boards with eraser markers for the teachers.

The resort we stayed at, Essque Zalu, is in a remote part of the island of Zanzibar, Tazania near Nungwi.  While they are not on the official list of Pack for a Purpose, we did contact them prior to our visit about donating school supplies to the local village school.  Fortunately, other guests have done this in the past, so there were well acquainted with the local school officials.  They gave us a short list of things that the school usually needed and that helped us put together the items we brought with us.  We had a friend who was a school teacher, so they gave us a great local resource at home, where we could purchase supplies at a significant discount.  Overall, we had enough items for around 100 students and the cost was less than $100.

When we arrived at the resort, they suggested that we make the delivery in person.  One of the hotel senior staff took us into the village where we met the headmaster.  They thanked us for the donation and took us to three different classrooms to give the items directly to the children.  We were very surprised at the number of children in each school and in each individual classroom.  Most schools in Zanzibar have upwards of 1000-1500 per school, with anywhere from 40-100 students per class.  The colored pencils and crayons went to kindergarten students, while the other supplies went to third and fourth year students.  After handing out the supplies, the headmaster had the classes come outside for a photo.

Overall, we loved the experience and plan to make it a regular part of our travels.  It was very easy to put the items together and bring them along.  We also involved some of our neighbors in the project, which made it even better.  For more information about Pack for a Purpose, follow this link.  Here are some additional photos of the kids and the school.

In Zanzibar

Well, after too many hours flying, we arrived in Zanzibar early Saturday AM.  Unfortunately, our luggage did not.  It’s been delayed in Istanbul for two days, but today, we are hoping is our lucky day and it will soon be here.  Luckily we had packed a change of clothes in our carry-on, but after 3 days, those are starting to get a bit “worn”.  Weather is great, in the upper 80s, lower 90s each day.  We’ll have more throughout the day, but here’s a couple of pictures.

Off to Africa

We’re off to Tanzania and Zanzibar in east Africa later this week.  We’re going to try shooting video exclusively on our Canon 5d MKII, along with our new Glidecam 4000, so we’ll see how that turns out.  To get there, we’ll be trying out the new Turkish Airlines service from LAX to Istanbul (IST).  We’ll have a full report on that when we return, as well as (hopefully) some great photos, videos and a full destination report.  We’ll also be tweeting and blogging during the trip, so follow us on Twitter (@itsallhere) or check out our blog daily starting next Sunday (April 15th).  We’ll also have a couple more posts before we leave.
