We first noticed Essque Zalu in a travel magazine over the winter.  We thought it looked very interesting and put it on our list of things to consider as we planned upcoming destinations.  Out of the blue, we noticed it was listed on a friend’s timeshare site as an exchange property, that could be reserved for four weeks in April.  So, being that this was now going to turn into a stay that cost us almost nothing, needless to say, it moved up the list quickly.  We found out as we researched Zanzibar, that
April is one of the second rainiest months of the year.  Now it was coming clear.  But, with a nearly free stay, we decided to persevere.  And, we’re glad we did.  It was a very nice play to spend a few days relaxing, with great service and other than a couple of short 30 minute rainstorms at night, worked out perfectly.  It appears that many are “scared off” at the thought of rainy season, as there were never more than 10-15 guests at the resort during our stay.  Normal capacity is 175.

Location:
It’s fairly difficult to get to Tanzania, let alone Zanzibar if you live in the US or points west.  Once you reach Dar es Salaam, the capital of Tanzania, it’s a short flight or moderate ferry ride to Stone Town on Zanzibar.  Once you arrive in Stone Town, Essque Zalu is about an hours drive straight north to the small village of Nungwi at the upper tip of the island.  The good news is the road is in very good shape, except the last half mile or so to Essque Zalu.  If you’re suffering from constipation or any other stomach/colon-based affliction, you’ll be relieved of it (quite literally) after driving that last half mile.

Security:
We read a lot of travel guides prior to our trip.  Many indicated that personal security was a concern in this part of the island.  We never felt unsafe at any point, nor did we notice anything to give us concern.  Essque Zalu does have security guards on duty 24/7, patrolling both the resort grounds as well as the main entrance and waterfront.

Rooms:
We stayed in an Ocean View Suite, which was more than adequate.  Each suite is a villa style room, with over 500 square feet of space.  There’s a small sitting area with love seat, chairs, desk and TV.  The sleeping area has a large king bed with canopy, that’s fronted by a large 200 sq ft patio, complete with chairs and table.  There’s a full walk in closet, along with a safe and plenty of drawers to store clothes for a week or two’s stay.  Bathrooms were extremely large, including an oversized walk in shower, dual sinks, toilet and bidet.  Note that there are no bath tubs.  Rooms were cleaned promptly and extremely thoroughly everyday, plus there was turn down service every evening.  Most Ocean View suites have full-on views of the ocean from the patio and front windows.  We really couldn’t see paying extra for a sea front suite, unless you really wanted to be fronting the ocean.  There is no beach at this resort, so sea front suites overlook a small 15ft cliff to the ocean.

Facilities:
Essque Zalu has just about everything you could need for your stay.  There are three restaurants, two in the main resort building and one on the jetty over the Indian Ocean.  The main restaurant serves a wide array of food, while the other one in the main building serves a more upscale, price-fixe menu.  The restaurant on the jetty serves primarily middle eastern/asian food that really exceeded our expectations.  Food here is fairly reasonable considering your location.

Oddly enough, breakfast is one of the most expensive.  Meal plans are available with your stay, however we chose to go “ala carte”.  We spent an average of about $60 per day on food and drinks per person.  There are three bars as well.  One serving each restaurant.  The main bar and jetty bar are more
informal, featuring game tables and plenty of seating.  Drinks here are excellent and average between $6-$9 each, tax inclusive.  In addition there is a small gift shop, as well as spa and workout facility.  The workout facility is open air, so on hot days, you’ll sweat twice as much.  The gym features TechnoGym equipment and has 5-6 different machines.  You can walk along the coast at low tide to the village or via the road.  There are a few other smaller resorts nearby as well as a couple of places to eat in Nungwi.  Free wi-fi is available throughout the resort, however signal strength and speed can vary widely.

Staff:
Everyone at Essque Zalu was extremely pleasant and helpful.  Most of the resorts workers come from the Tanzanian mainland and speak very good English.  Service can be on “Africa time”, but it’s always done with a smile.  Drink service at the pool can be slow on some days, but the price of drinks will make it worth your wait.

Pros:
A great place to rest and relax.  Everything you need is at the resort to make for an enjoyable stay.

Cons:
You are in a remote part of the island.  Going to other island tourist attractions and Stone Town can be expensive and take a reasonable amount of time.  Power outages occur frequently at various times of the day.  They never last long (5-10 minutes), but some may find that frustrating.

IAH TIP:  Deals and specials are available during rainy seasons.

If you’re looking for a suitable hotel close to the Cairo airport, the JW Marriott may fit the bill.  We used this for a short 8 hour stopover on our way out of Cairo and it worked well.

Location: The hotel is technically located in Heliopolis, less than 10 minutes from the Cairo Airport.  You’re around 25-30 minutes from downtown Cairo, depending upon traffic.  The Giza Pyramids are about 30-45 minutes, again, depending upon traffic.

Rooms: While the rooms have been recently renovated, they are done in an “older” hotel style.  Think provincial colonial maybe?  If you stayed at a Marriott stateside in the late 90s, it appears they’ve finally found a use for all of that furniture they never used.  Dark woods, dark carpeting permeate throughout and find their way into the green marbled bathroom as well.  However, that being said, the room was clean and updated with all the amenities one would expect to find in a Marriott.

Facilities: This hotel is a large, sprawling 400+ room complex situated on a large, rambling golf course.  There’s always a bevy of activity in the lobby and a line of cars out front.  In addition to the basics, there are 12 restaurants, a spa, the golf course and a waterpark.  We had appetizers and drinks in one of the lobby restaurants.  The food was mediocre at best, the service polite, but extremely slow.  This while the restaurant and bar were maybe 25% full.  Bags and guests are security screened upon arrival in the outer lobby.  The hotel perimeter is secured and cars searched before being allowed near the front lobby.

Staff:  What really sets this hotel apart is the front desk and concierge staff.  They were extremely friendly and accommodating, more so than many Marriott properties we’ve stayed at.  They helped us arrange transportation to the airport and also were very helpful with local information.  We couldn’t say enough nice things about the staff here.

Pros: One of the best hotels near the Cairo airport with reasonable rates.

Cons:  If we were staying in this area for more than 24 hours, we’d look for a different hotel of similar quality, although you will pay more.

Wow.That’s the best word to describe the Four Seasons at Sharm El Sheikh.  The Four Seasons Sharm is an oasis of calm in the desert.  It’s one of those places where you don’t really care if you ever leave the resort.  It’s that good.  We visited here in late November, during the midst of the turmoil in Cairo. The Sinai is a world away from all those problems.  We stayed here on the recommendation of friends who visited here a couple of years before.  They said we wouldn’t be disappointed and we weren’t.  Many of the guests that stay here are from the EU, UK or Russia.  A few Australians and US folks make up the rest.  Our review of the spa is separate and can be found here.

Location:
Four Seasons Sharm is located a mere 5-7 minute drive from the Sharm el Sheikh airport.  We used transfers arranged by the hotel.  You’re about a 10-15 minute taxi ride to the heart of Na’ama Bay and about 20-30 minutes to Sharm el Sheikh itself.  We only ventured from the resort a few times.  We really found all that we needed right here.  There are a few other resorts located nearby, however most are a 5-10 minute walk or more from the resort.  The resort faces the Red Sea with a good beach and a full on-site dive facility.

Security:
The Four Seasons takes security seriously at all of its resorts.  The entrance to the resort is a good distance away from the main building and any rooms. There’s a 24 hour guard, as well as automatic barriers at the entrance.  Cars are screened before accessing the premise, taxis are not allowed inside the front gate and baggage of visitors is screened outside the main reception entrance.  In addition the perimeter of the resort is fenced.  We never felt the least bit unsafe.

Rooms:
Our superior room was large and well appointed.  There was plenty of room to stretch out and relax.  The room included a king bed, sitting area, built-in sofa, along with a desk, table and chairs.  There’s a large connecting hallway leading toward the bathroom that contains a full walk-in closet, plus large storage closetson the opposite side.  There’s a large safe for your belongings and a small area for coffee and tea.  The bathroom was also large with two sinks, an enclosed toilet area, large soaking bath tub and shower.  As with all Four Seasons locations, you get a very nice sized room for the money.

Facilities:
What doesn’t this hotel have.  The surroundings are typical Four Seasons.  Lush, green with wandering paths and fountains everywhere.  Even though this resort has 136 rooms, their spread out across a wide area of the resort in smaller buildings, so you hardly even know anyone else is there.  There are four pools, tennis courts, a full service spa, large fitness room, on-site diving facility, five restaurants and three bars.  What else could you need?

We ate at all of the restaurants on the property.  Our favorite was the Reef Grill, an open air restaurant on the shores of the Red Sea.  Once a week, the Reef has fish market night, where you can select your fresh fish on ice and have it cooked to your liking.  We had the breakfast buffet every morning at Arabesque and what a buffet it was.  It had American European and Eqyptian specialties that were unbelievable.  One night during dinner at Arabesque, you could watch them making pita bread fresh near your table.  Il Frantolo is their more formal restaurant located in the main reception building.  It has an Italian flare and a very nice courtyard for dining.  It had the best Tiramisu we’ve had just about anywhere.  Two restaurants are located by the major pool areas and have a very typical resort lunch and dinner menu.  The food here was of the same high quality as food on the rest of the resort.

Staff:
The staff at the Four Seasons makes everything look effortless.  If only all resorts had this level of service.  Everyone at the resort was very friendly and always said “Hello”.  Room cleaning was done quickly and efficiently as was the daily turndown service.  By the pool, various small complimentary snacks were brought by throughout the day, as was complimentary sunglass cleaning.  The staff at the Dive Center were very knowledgeable and very thorough.  Spa staff were also very friendly and helpful.

Pros:
If you’re going to Sharm, why stay anywhere else?  This resort has everything you need for a self-contained vacation, along with phenomenal views of the Red Sea.

Cons:
There really aren’t any.  Even though you’re a way from town, it’s still easy and relatively inexpensive to go in when and if you need to.  Security may be a concern for some, be we never felt unsafe the entire time we were here.

IAH TIP:  Check out various package deals offered by the hotel to get a great rate.
