Location
The Hostile Grape is located at The M Resort in Henderson.  It’s approximately 17 miles west on Las Vegas Blvd from the Wynn/Fashion Show Mall area.  It’s definitely not close in and cab fare will run you about $40 each way from the strip.  Oddly enough, The M, does advertise that it’s located “on the strip”, which is vaguely true, since it is technically on Las Vegas Blvd. If you’re staying in Las Vegas, this probably isn’t a place you’d journey out to, unless you’re going to spend some time at their restaurants, spa or casino.  One advantage the M does have, is they do have lower priced gambling tables during off-peak hours.

Atmosphere
The entire M Resort is a very beautiful, contemporary resort in the middle of nowhere.  The Hostile Grape, is located in it’s own space downstairs, just off the main lobby.  It’s what you’d expect in a wine bar, dark wood, dark colors, comfortable chairs and couches and wine bottles along the walls.  It’s an extremely comfortable place and a great way to relax and pass the time.

Wine/Drinks
The Hostile Grape is first and foremost a wine bar.  And, a pretty nice one at that.  With over 160 wines you can sample by the glass, via automated wine dispensers, you can choose a one, three or five ounce pour.  WIth you automated, rechargeable card, you simply put your card in the dispenser, select the wine and size of pour you want and voila, your set.  Wine varies, but a majority of them are between $3-$8 for a 3 oz pour.  There’s a good balance of white, red and sparkling from various places around the globe.  There is a stronger emphasis on US wines, but other countries are well represented.  Many of the wines you can sample are also available via the bottle.  If wine isn’t your thing, they also have a full bar, where you can order cocktails or nonalcoholic beverage of your choice.

Food
Even though the emphasis is on wine, they do have a great selection of tapas and cheese plates.  A bit pricey, but the quality was very good.

Overall
The Hostile Grape is a great way to sample a lot of different wines, without committing to a bottle.  It’s comfortable, casual and a great place to hang out for happy hour or an entire evening.  The big drawback here is location.  That is of course, unless you’re staying at the M, or don’t mind driving 20-30 minutes from the strip.

Location

MoZen is located on the 3rd floor in the Mandarin Oriental hotel at the City Center complex.  The Mandarin is a few steps off of the Las Vegas Blvd side of the City Center complex.

Atmosphere
MoZen is a great casual place to relax and unwind while having a fantastic meal.  Among the many things that the Mandarin folks do well, is layout.  The dining area is split into a couple of different areas, both fairly wide and shallow.  Almost every table in the restaurant has a great view out of the floor to ceiling windows facing the strip.  Even when MoZen is close to capacity, you can still have a pleasant conversation without having to raise your voice.  You also have the option of sitting at the sushi bar.

Service
Service was typical Mandarin.  Flawless.  Our servers were very attentive and knew the menu well.  They made some great recommendations of items we would have never thought of trying, which was a wonderful surprise.  Because of the menu and a large number of small plate items, table real estate can be an issue.  If you want a bunch of small plates, our suggestion is to work with your server on coursing out the dishes, so that you don’t run out of room on the table.

Food
All of the food items here lived up to our high expectations.  While at first glance, the menu may look like its primarily composed of asian dishes, there are lots of different options for different tastes.  No matter what your taste, if you can’t find what you like here, it’s probably unavailable anywhere.  Some of our favorites from the small plate menu were the Yam Neua (grilled strip loin), Singapore Chili Crab, Murgh Mahkani (tandoor chicken) and the sushi.  For dessert, everything centers around chocolate.  And, even though you have quite a few choices, you need to go for the Chocolate Cloche.  It’s a chocolate sphere, with madagascar vanilla gelato inside.  Accompanying it is a hot passion fruit caramel that is poured over the top when it’s served.  It melts through the sphere, exposing the gelato and makes for one of the best desserts we’ve ever had.

Wine/Drinks
The Mandarin has a great wine list with many selections available by the glass.  As for mixed drinks, we highly recommend the Lychee Smash (TY KU liqueur, lychee liqueur, pear purée, simple syrup, fresh lemon juice, mint leaves) or the Golden Leaf Mandarin Martini (Hendrick’s, Aperol, muddled mandarin, pineapple, fresh lime juice and simple syrup).

Overall
There are lots of great restaurants in Vegas, but if you’re looking for great selection, a wonderful dining experience away from the hubbub, MoZen makes the perfect choice.

We usually never eat at a buffet.  There are only three exceptions that I can think of:  The Peninsula Bangkok’s over-the-top dinner buffet; the breakfast buffet at the now defunct Le Meridian Hotel in Los Monteros, Spain, and the buffet at the Wynn.

When in Vegas, the Wynn Buffet is a must, at least for brunch or lunch.  While we’ve noticed a slight decline in the food quality over the past couple of years, it’s still a great place to get your food on.  Put all of those things that come to mind when you hear “buffet”.  This is unlike most others and you won’t be disappointed.

Atmosphere
A buffet is a buffet and the atmosphere here is what you’d expect.  Of course, it’s done in the Wynn style, so it’s a cut above.  Several “dining rooms” exit off of the main atrium dining area, so there’s room for an amazing amount of people.  However, don’t be fooled that you can just walk in anytime and sit right down.  It’s best to arrive early or at “off times” to be seated quickly. It’s not uncommon to have over 100 people in line waiting to sit.  And sometimes, that line moves at a glacial pace at peak times.

Service
Service here is good.  They can be a bit slow refilling drinks and clearing plates, but they do a pretty good job considering the amount of tables a single server takes care of.

Food
If you can’t find something to eat here, it’s pretty much hopeless.  The buffet at the Wynn has just about anything you could want.  All of the food is laid out in a huge, spacious area.  It features hot and cold breakfast items, fruit, soups, salads, pastas, every sort of meat you can think of, fresh seafood, sushi and lots of other “entree” style meals.  Because of the huge crowds, the food turns over quickly, keeping it hot and fresh.  After you’re done with a few visits to the regular food lines, you’ll want to visit one of the largest dessert buffets around.  With around 30 different selections, plus ice cream and espresso, even the hardest to satisfy sweet tooth will walk away happy.

Overall
It doesn’t hurt to starve yourself a bit before hitting the buffet at the Wynn.  And remember, take it slow.  There’s a lot to take in and a lot of things you’ll want to try.  It’s one buffet, you don’t want to miss.

Before you make reservations at one of the “high end” hotel restaurants with a popular celebrity chefs name, make sure you make time to visit Firefly.  Sure, it may be in a strip mall.  Of course, it’s not on the strip.  But it’s just a few minutes taxi ride from any of the large hotels and believe us, it’s worth the ride.  And don’t think you won’t need a reservation.  This place is almost always packed, especially on weekends.  Once you taste the food and the drinks, you’ll know why.  And trust us, we’ve eaten at those high end restaurants on the strip.  This is just as good, if not better and you’re wallet will be much happier in the end.  Firefly recently closed it’s location downtown at the Fremont Experience and opened another in West Las Vegas on Sahara.

Atmosphere
You’ll find the Paradise location of Firefly in a strip mall on Paradise Rd, less than a block from the Wynn Golf Course.  The location isn’t huge, but they do have a small patio out front.  Reservations are almost essential.  Since the place is almost always packed, it’s noisy.  This isn’t going to be a place where you have quiet conversation.  Forget the white table cloths, this place puts all it’s effort into the food.  It has a “cheap mexican” restaurant feel, but don’t let that deter you.

Service
Service was extremely good, especially considering that the place is always packed.  Drinks were delivered promptly and the food just keeps coming.  Very friendly and efficient.

Food
I don’t care how picky you are, if you can’t find something here that you want to eat, then you might as well starve.  Their huge menu of tapas items of all shapes and sizes includes over 50 different items.  All of the tapas here are good sized portions, especially for th

e price.  If you plan on 3-4 tapas plates per person, you’ll be far from walking away hungry.  Our favorites included the ham and cheese croquets, baked tetilla manchego mac & cheese, padron peppper and stuffed dates.  But, believe me, it’s hard to pick a favorite here because it’s all good.  Don’t miss the white and red sangria.  Both were excellent and it’s available by the pitcher.  They also have a selection of entrees if tapas isn’t your thing as well as wine and mixed drinks.

Overall

No question, this is a must go to dinner spot if you’re in Vegas.  If you follow any of the review links above, you’ll see that almost everyone loves the Firefly.

Stop by any of the three locations of Espresso Vivace in Seattle and you’ll understand what all of the buzz is about.  And I’m not just talking the buzz from the espresso.  The espresso here is fantastic.  Some of the best we’ve had in our travels.  Started as a coffee cart back in the late 80s, these folks have perfected the art of espresso above and beyond what other small shops try to be.  We stopped into the location on Yale, directly across from the REI flagship store.  A huge space, with plenty of Espresso Vivaceroom to spread out and enjoy the free wireless, you can linger over you favorite espresso or coffee drink and watch the day go by.  Vivace concentrates on just two coffee blends. Espresso Vita and Espresso Dolce.  Our preference was for Dolce, due to the great chocolate undertones.  Vita has a slightly more caramel taste.  Either way, you can’t go wrong.  An added bonus is their website has useful information for baristas or just others who have an interest in making a great cup of espresso. You can also order their coffee beans on-line both roasted or “green”, so even if you can’t make it to Seattle, you can still enjoy it!

IAH TIP:  Parking in this neighborhood can be challenging at best.  We parked in the REI parking garage for free (First hour is free) and walked across the street to Espresso Vivace.

Located directly across from the Pike Street Market, you can’t miss this great coffee place.  If you’re looking for a wide selection of coffee, you’ve found the right place.  SCW has an Express Bar, where you can order your drink and be on your way, or a Seattle Coffee Works“Slow Bar”, which has more of a “tasting room” concept, similar to wineries.  At the Slow Bar, you can sample from a long list of coffees from around the world.  You can also sample the same coffee brewed by different methods to see the effects it has on taste.  If you have time to kick back or are a coffee aficionado, then definitely take some time and enjoy.  This shop is a bit small, for as popular as it is, so if you’re there at peak times, you may have trouble finding a seat.  They do have several tables outside on the sidewalk, so if the weather is nice, you’ll be able to people watch the traffic heading to the market.  SCW has coffees available by mail order, including unroasted and roasted coffee. They also have a “subscription” coffee service, so you’ll never run out of your favorite joe.

IAH TIP:  If you’re going to the Pike Place Market, just take a short 2 minute walk across the street to SCW.

Know Before You Go:
As with many restaurants in DC, you’ll definitely want to make a reservation.  Without one, you’ll either be sitting at the bar or waiting a couple of hours to get in.

Atmosphere
The restaurant is very open and very contemporary.  Large floor to ceiling windows give you great views of the outdoors as you sit at your table.  Being a Jose Andres restaurant, this place is always busy.  With the concrete floor and sleek furnishings, this is not a place to have quiet conversation.  The noise factor can be rather high during peak hours.

Service
It’s hard to describe the service here.  It’s definitely fine and fairly attentive, but the servers make it seem like it’s a chore and they really don’t want to be here.  It’s not unfriendly, just kind of disconnected.  Almost like they can’t wait to get off work and go do something else.

Food
We’ve traveled Greece and Turkey and the food here is spot on authentic.  From the tzatziki and tabouleh to the lamb and the shish, it’s all very good.  Zaytinya is geared towards small plates, so you can try a lot of different dishes and share with friends as well.  Prices are average and portions are reasonably sized.

Overall
If you’re looking for great Mediterranean food in DC, this is your place.  Jose Andres is well known for creating great quality food and he doesn’t disappoint here.

Etta’s occupies a long time spot on the Seattle dining scene.  Located diagonally from the north end of the Pike Place Market, it’s easy to find and a great place to people watch from a window side table. The space is large, with banquettes and tables.  No matter where you sit, you have a decent view out the windows towards the street and water.

Service here was great.  Our server was very friendly, conversational and knew the menu well.  When we visited in May, we started with a Rhubarb Margarita that was a unique twist on a bar staple.  In fact, we had a couple they were that good.
Things not to be missed are the Dungeness Crab Jalapeno dip, raw oysters on the half shell, captains seafood platter and dungeness crab cakes.  The crab cakes here are all crab.  No fluff, no fillers.  Crispy on the outside and ample sized, two crab cakes easily make a meal.  Desserts are supplied by Dahlia Bakery, as they are at most Tom Douglas restaurants.  We opted for the Peanut Butter Bar, which was light, airy and was perfect.  We also had the Rhubarb Strawberry Crisp, which was good, but not nearly as good as the Peanut Butter Bar.

While the restaurant appears to be a bit “tired”, it was packed the night we were there and everyone looked like they were having a good time.  The quality of the seafood was excellent.  If anything, the menu isn’t large, but there’s plenty of choice for most people.  While there would be other places in the area that we’d eat at first, you definitely won’t be disappointed by Etta’s.

Top Pot doughnuts are anything but run of the mill.  We’ve enjoyed their doughnuts at Starbucks for the past few years.  Since we had the opportunity to go directly to the source on our Seattle trip, we couldn’t pass it up. Top Pot started on Capitol Hill about 9 years ago and has expanded to 7 locations around Seattle, including the mobile doughnut unit.

We visited the location near Belltown on 5th.  This place was huge with ample seating for over a hundred people.  A few busloads of people could stop here for coffee and doughnuts and they’re would still be room for more.

Top Pot has been featured on just about every Travel Channel and Food Network program over the years, in addition to most travel publications.  For most places, that means things go downhill quickly, once fame sets in.  Not here.  With over 40 different kinds of doughnuts, you’ll definitely find a favorite.  We sampled just 3 or 4 but each one was pretty much perfect.  Whether you like “cake-sty;e” or “raised style”, you’re be in seventh heaven.

So when you visit Seattle, make sure to stop in one that’s near you.  It won’t be hard to find.  Also, their coffee is also great, so make sure to give that a try, too.

Serious Pie is a great place for unique thin crust pizzas in Belltown in downtown Seattle.  Another Tom Douglas outpost, this isn’t your typical pizza spot.  If you want your basic, everyday pizza, go elsewhere.  With just 5 pies on the menu, you won’t have a lot of choices, but you can do some mixing and matching of ingredients.  There’s usually also a “pizza of the day” that’s not included on the menu.
On this visit, we had a basic mozzarella and San Marzano tomato pie with fennel sausage as an addition. If you’re a thin crust pizza fan, you’ll be wowed.  No thick crust options here.  The crust is very light, with an almost airy quality.  If you tend to eat more than a couple slices, you won’t feel like you just ate a loaf of bread, as at some other pizza places.

Pizza’s here can be a bit spendy.  Most pies are $14-$19 and will break down into about 8 oblong slices.  If you’re hungry, you can definitely do a single pie per person.
Serious has a decent wine list, mostly Italian in nature, with a few WA state wines.  Microbrews on tap, plus a hard cider round out the drink options.  Not to be missed is the home made root beer.  Unbelievable.  It has great spice and reminds you of what root beer should be.

Service here was extremely fast and efficient.  We had our pizza in less than 15 minutes and the place was packed.  We wouldn’t have guessed on that based upon the smaller size of the kitchen. You can easily expect to wait 30-60 minutes for a seat during peak times.  The waiting area is a bit small, but you can catch a drink at Dahlia Lounge located next door.  The hostess will call you on your cell phone when your table at Serious is ready.  Dahlia is also owned by Tom Douglas as well.

All in all, if you’re into unique pies or a pizza aficionado you can’t miss Serious Pie.  It’s serious.
