Trung Nguyen started in 1996 just with a bike. As of the end of 2013, more than 13 billion cups of Trung Nguyen coffee has been served.
With 60+ shops in Vietnam and five in Singapore, Trung Nguyen is setting it sights on the US. We stopped in one of their main stores in Hoh Chi Minh city in Vietnam. They definitely have the retail model down, as their stores look very similar to a Starbucks. Large sitting areas, as well as pastries and food items are available. In addition to having a wide selection of coffees available, they also serve coffee in the Turkish and traditional Vietnamese styles as well.
One thing that sets them apart is the amount of space dedicated to selling coffee beans. In the Vietnam stores, they scoop a wide variety of beans from coffee bags. You can touch, feel and smell them before you buy. No vacuum packaging here. You can also buy traditional of synthetic kopi luwak. Kopi luwak is coffee that is eaten from the coffee bush by civets, digested (where fermentation takes place) and then excreted in their feces. The beans are then collected and washed. The coffee is very expensive and is decried as a delicacy. Trung Nguyen has also developed a synthetic method of simulating Kopi luwak and sells that as well. You can buy Trung Nguyen beans in the US or Canada online from Trung Nguyen or from Amazon.
Trung Nguyen is definitely worth a stop as they serve great coffee and espresso.
